Spotlight: Partnership Between Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table (SBART) and PCA is IMPACTFUL!

09.26.2019

The Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table and Positive Coaching Alliance -Los Angeles have been partners since 2014 delivering 34 workshops involving over 1800 participants. In 2017 SBART sponsorship a special event featuring PCA and Julie Foudy as the guest speaker.  Julie Foudy was one of the life-time achievement award winners at PCA’s recent National Sports Youth Awards & Benefit.

Recent collaboration between SBART and PCA

PCA recently delivered a Character & Leadership Development Symposium for select leaders from each of the six high schools in the Channel League. Student-Athletes learned how to make themselves, their teammates and the game better. Having all of the schools together fostered good sportsmanship and friendly competition for the better high-fives and cheers. Long-time PCA Trainer and Certified Master Athletic Administrator performed the Program and had all of the student-athletes engaged.

Next up for PCA and SBART is to have all of the Channel League schools bring PCA to their entire student-athlete body participate.

SBART is a strong community leader with programming and events throughout the school year:

SBART hosts five events during the school year in furtherance of its mission:

  • Weekly press conferences. Coaches of all sports are scheduled at different times during the to speak and introduce some of their players.
  • Hall of Fame. Each year a number of local athletes, coaches and community leaders are inducted. Members include former athletes such as Randle and Sam Cunningham, Tod Rodgers, Steve Pate, Keith Wilkes and Karch Kiraly to name a few.
  • Women and Girls in Sports Luncheon. 350-400 female athletes from all the local high schools and colleges attend this event each to celebrate the passage of Title IX. Inspirational speakers share their stories and have included Nancy Drisdale Myers and several Olympic athletes.
  • Prelude to March Madness. This event features a well-known speaker from the basketball world. Past speakers have included John Wooden, Jerry West, George Raveling and Keith Wilkes.
  • Evening with the Athletes. Awards are given to local athletes and coaches in recognition of their achievement during the year. This is a free event attended by families and friends of the awardees.

The genesis of the partnership between SBART and PCA

Jay Smith (SBART board member) learned about PCA in 2014 through his son Taylor Smith, who is a member of the Leadership Council (Julie Smith, his daughter, is also a member of the Leadership Council and was on the host committee for the recent awards dinner). SBART approved the concept of having PCA provide workshops to athletes, coaches and parents involved in school and club sports. Grants were obtained from local foundations by SBART to fund a three-year program.

When sports are done right, sports teach. PCA ensures sports are ‘done right’ with programming that is research-based and designed to have impact at three levels in a youth sports organization or school:

  • YOUTH experience improved life skills and character development.
  • COACHES become more positive and increase their focus on using sports to teach life lessons.
  • YOUTH SPORTS ORGANIZATIONS AND SCHOOLS see their cultures become more positive and everyone involved has more fun.

Since 1998, PCA has reached thousands of organizations around the country, and affected millions of youth athletes. As a nationwide non-profit with 18 chapters, PCA has partnered with roughly 3,500 schools and youth sports organizations nationwide to deliver more than 20,000 live group workshops, reaching 19.2 million youth in 20 years of work. In addition to PCA’s live workshops, PCA also offers online courses and has over 2,000 multimedia tips and tools for coaches, parents, athletes, and leaders available free of charge on PCADevZone.org.
