Mark Lund, President and General Manager of WBZ-TV/CBS Boston is a father of six who has spent countless hours on the field, is an avid sports fan, and believes that sports done right are an incredible opportunity to learn life lessons. Mark became a member of the Board of PCA-New England in 2017 and has supported PCA-NE in many ways, including by making Boston’s best news talent available to facilitate events in New England.

This fall, Mark helped make magic happen for PCA-NE.

Thanks to Mark and CBS EcoMedia, PCA-NE was awarded a $100,000 grant from the Chevy Dealers of New England, to deliver a special series of IMPACT workshops. In four months, PCA-NE delivered 34 Triple-Impact Competitor® workshops at 19 locations reaching more than 2,000 student-athletes.

Launching the series in September at Boston’s John D. O’Bryant School for Mathematics and Science (click here to see PCA-NE’s blog on the launch) in honor of PCA-NE Triple-Impact Competitor and O’Bryant student Angela Cao, PCA invited Gevvie Stone, M.D., Olympic silver medalist in rowing (Rio 2016) and emergency room physician to share her experiences. Dr. Stone, who is planning to compete in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics talked about the power of a positive mindset and striving to be 1% better every day.

PCA-NE brought in top trainers from around the country and developed special materials, including banners and bookmarks featuring the SPORTS TEACH theme and the PCA self-assessment tool “Are you a Triple-IMPACT Competitor?” The series touched student-athletes throughout New England including for example, at high schools in Arlington, Auburn, Boston, Braintree, Lawrence, Mattapoisett and Norwood MA, Brattleboro VT, and Concord and Durham NH plus after-school baseball and squash programs in Boston, Lawrence, and Lynn MA at The Dugout and SquashBusters.

The magic?

Incredible feedback from students at each of the 19 schools and youth sports organizations. “AMAZING” “Inspirational, it breathed life into me” “Helps me see how to be a better teammate” “Made an impact into my mindset and thinking” “Loved it” “Opened my mind on how I see the game and how I can approach it” “Motivating” “All the things I’ve been wanting to tell others, and do myself” and “I needed to hear this.”

93% of the participants surveyed rated PCA’s content as “excellent” and agreed that they “intend to use the workshop ideas/tools this year.”

Participants shared “truthful and specific praise” for teammates and were rewarded with free t-shirts for PCA-NE’s annual Harvard STADIUM STAMPEDE, a “sweat for good” awareness-raiser and fundraiser that starts with a climb up and down Harvard Stadium and ends with an after-party of burritos, and for those 21+, Sam Adams.

Partners developed through the grant want PCA to come back and deliver more workshops
for student-athletes, and for coaches, leaders, and parents.

CBS EcoMedia filmed a “day in the life” video of Triple-Impact Competitor Angela Cao, and spotlighted the IMPACT of this series of workshops. PCA-NE will share that beautiful, powerful video at its JEANS + JERSEYS celebration this spring.

As the photos here show, we made an IMPACT, and the kids want more!

Thank you Mark, the Chevy Dealers of New England, and CBS EcoMedia for helping us share the message that DONE RIGHT, SPORTS TEACH and help kids develop the character and leadership they need to thrive on and off the field of play.
